Migraines Q & A

What is a migraine?

A migraine is an excruciating headache that throbs relentlessly. When a migraine strikes, it can make you so nauseous that you become sick, or so sensitive to light that you have to stay in a dark room with the blinds closed.

How long do migraines last?

A migraine can come on quite suddenly and resolve in a few hours or it can linger for four or five days. Whether it comes and goes or lasts several days, migraines are characterized by four phases:

Sometimes called the pre-headache, the prodrome comes on a few hours or days before a migraine hits and has its own symptoms, such as food cravings, excessive yawning, constipation, irritability, and fluid retention.

The aura is a short-lived but frightening hour or so where your vision blurs, you can’t find words to communicate, your muscles weaken, your face is numb and you are hypersensitive to smells.

Even though it’s called the headache phase, unfortunately, a migraine often affects your whole body. During this stage, the migraine headache can last up to three days and be accompanied by vomiting, depression, chills, anxiety, and nasal congestion.

Also called the post-headache, the postdrome is the final stage of a migraine. As you recover from the episode, you feel sluggish, hungover, and drained.

What causes migraines?

It’s not completely clear what causes migraines, but studies point to environmental and genetic factors as the most likely cause. It’s also probable that hormonal fluctuations, food additives, stress, and allergies can trigger a migraine.
